Transit-Oriented Development

Uniting city centres around rapid transport.

Meck was selected by the City of Canterbury Bankstown to help shape future-focused, transit-oriented master plans around new metro stations for the growing centres of Bankstown and Campsie. Each plan has been recognised in innovation and resilience, winning a 2021 Greater Sydney Commission’ Planning Award.

Strategy for Transformation

Meck managed a team of consultants and built capacity amongst Council staff to facilitate the transformational project. Each master plan is a 20-year strategic document aligned with local and state planning levers that will unlock equitable investment. An increase in affordable art exhibition and co-working spaces will increase creative jobs, reduced restrictions on night-time activity will facilitate 24-hour dynamism, sustainability controls will mitigate the urban heat island effect and more affordable housing will support residents needs.

Integrating the New with the Old

A thorough place assessment was conducted to understand unique history, people and place characteristics. Meck utilised this evidence base to create future character areas and place responsive built form typologies. Improving mobility choice was also key, so the master plans call for widened footpaths, integrated bicycle path networks and a better bus network.
