The Hawkesbury, Australia

Town Centre Streetscape

Heritage streets, today.

The Hawkesbury is one of Sydney’s famed destinations with rich colonial and indigenous heritage amidst the Blue Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Area. As part of a state liveability initiative, Council upgraded its historic town centres of Windsor, South Windsor and Richmond. Meck was hired to provide design management services on Council’s behalf. Meck then delivered community consultation and streetscape activation.

Place-Led Design

The design for each centre aims to celebrate existing heritage, while introducing a greener environment with improved active transport infrastructure and enhanced social environments. Through public domain upgrades, placemaking and activation, the charm of the Hawkesbury region has been preserved and enhanced. Following feedback from the public and indigenous consultation processes, Council engaged Place Design Group to validate and update the master plan, and take each project to construction. Meck provided design guidance via the project control group.

With construction completed in 2023, key outcomes include:

100+ mature trees in Richmond and South Windsor

new feature paving and street furniture

compliant accessibility

Upgrade or new pedestrian crossings

water sensitive urban design features

new surfacing, lighting and signage
